Josiah Emsley aka White Shoes had the kind of upbringing that could only lead to creative endeavors. The son of a juggling-shop proprietor and an artist, Josiah spent time traveling with his father - the aforementioned juggling-shop proprietor - building props and models for Gladiator, Tomorrow Never Dies and The Beach.

“I went to work with dad a lot, playing with the materials and chemicals he used. I got to see the sets and the warehouses full of props.” Josiah explains. “He was always explaining what he was doing today. Mould this, fill it with this, carve this, paint this.”

Josiah’s interest in photography began while he was still in school and has continued into his tertiary years, he currently studies at Central Saint Martins School of Art & Design, London. While he may have only begun using a 35mm last year the obsession was instant and lead to the purchasing of a plethora of old-model junk shop cameras. Followed by experimentation. His favourite light: as low as you can go.

“I like it when I get a shot that really reflects my thought at that moment.” Says Josiah. “For example: a photo with only a very specific detail in focus. As if that’s what I’m looking at and you’re seeing through my eyes.”

And the downsides? Well, they appear to be few, “Annoyingly, my girlfriend doesn’t like any pictures of her. Ever. Anywhere. But it’s ok, it has become a funny rule: on the White Shoes site. She’s always, ’girl with no face’.”
